About Can You Dig This
South Los Angeles. What comes to mind is gangs, drugs, liquor stores, abandoned buildings and vacant lots. The last thing that you would expect to find is a beautiful garden sprouting up through the concrete, coloring the urban landscape. As part of an urban gardening movement taking root in South LA, people are planting to transform their neighborhoods and are changing their own lives in the process. Calling for people to put down their guns and pick up their shovels, these “gangster gardeners” are creating an oasis in the middle of one of the most notoriously dangerous places in America. CAN YOU DIG THIS follows the inspirational journeys of four unlikely gardeners, discovering what happens when they put their hands in the soil. This is not a story of science and economics. This is a story of the human spirit, inspiring people everywhere to pick up their shovels and plant something. Learn more by visiting www.canyoudigthisfilm.com.

Girl Scout Troop 7775 Donates to Skyview Elementary

This spring, the dedicated members of Girl Scout Troop 7775 decided to donate the proceeds of their cookie sales to the Skyview Harmony Garden. So this morning, before the school bell at Skyview Elementary rang and before most of our students have even had their breakfast, members of Girl Scout Troop 7775 assembled in the school garden site for a donation ceremony. They were joined by their parents, Skyview Principal Ingrid Dodd, Music Teacher Austin Aeschbacher and PTA President Sarah Greenman.

Troop 7775 donated 2 Gorilla Carts, various shovels, rakes and gloves, a lady bug colony, hand made ladybug houses, 5 trees, a compost tumbler and compost. The girls have been studying compost systems, permaculture, life sciences and insect cycles. Their donation today affirms their commitment to sustainable living, whole food culture, conservation and land stewardship. Thank you Troop 7775 for your thoughtful donations and your diligent work with the Girl Scouts! We love you!

Art & Music

When Skyview PTA first envisioned the Harmony Garden and outdoor learning environment, we pictured a space filled with art, music and nature. Of course, we wanted our outdoor classroom to be a dynamic tool for teachers to enhance the STEM curriculum, but we also wanted the garden to be a place of respite, contemplation, beauty and inspiration.

Our outdoor musical instruments will be installed this summer. These instruments will fill the garden with harmonious sounds and provide an outside-of-the-box, sensory learning tool for our students. We're also excited about our gorgeous garden mural, which was created by our art teacher, Emily Ash, her 6th grade art students and the Skyview Art Club. The mural depicts children creating community through art, music and nature. The themes of equity, respect, community and reverence are highlighted in the mural. We can't wait for you to see the mural in person when you attend our ground breaking festivities next weekend! Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 16th from 9-11:30am.

Our Water Tank has Arrived!

Our rainwater tank is here! All RISD school gardens are required to be 100% sustained with recycled rain water - meaning that we are not allowed to use school water for the garden. This, necessitates a rain water collection system and adequate water storage. Today, our 1,000 gallon rainwater tank arrived on a trailer. Skyview students looked on and cheered as our shiny silver cistern made its way across the lawn an into the Skyview Harmony Garden. Thank you to Curtis Scoggins and his crew for unloading and installing the tank.

Our rain water collection system, which includes the tank, delivery, pump and downspout installation has a price tag of $2,950.00. We're still hoping to find a business to sponsor our rain collection system, but until then, the dedication plaque will remain blank. Make sure you come out for the official public ground breaking and spring fair on Saturday, April 16th from 9-11:30am to see our new tank (among other things). The Skyview Harmony Garden Ground Breaking is a not-to-be-missed community event!
